Book A Time

HMRC APP

Dec 15, 2022

You can use HMRC’s free app to manage your tax affairs and undertake a range of tasks. The app is available on both iOS and Android, and can be used on Apple and Android devices.

Key dates

The self-assessment payment deadline is approaching. You must pay any tax and National Insurance that you owe for 2021/22, and also, where relevant, your first payment on account for 2022/23, by midnight on 31 January 2023. This is just one of the tasks that can be done via the HMRC app.

This note explains the features of the app, and how you can make use of it.

Features of the HMRC app

The HMRC app allows you to look up a variety of information and is a handy first point of call. You can use the app to see:

  • your tax code;
  • your National Insurance number; and
  • your Unique Taxpayer (UTR).

You can also use the app to get proof of your National Insurance number by downloading and printing a letter. This can be useful if you need to provide a new employer with your National Insurance number.

If you have more than one employment, you will have a tax code for each employment. You can use the app to check the tax code for each job.

You can also use the app to check:

  • your income and benefits;
  • income from work for the previous five tax years;
  • any tax credits that you will receive and when they will be paid; and
  • your National Insurance record and state pension entitlement.

Undertaking tasks

The HMRC app can be used to undertake a variety of tasks, including:

  • making a self-assessment payment;
  • reporting tax credit changes and completing your tax credit renewal;
  • managing your child benefit;
  • accessing your Help to Save account;
  • tracking forms and letters that you have sent to HMRC;
  • claiming a refund if you have paid too much tax; and
  • making a marriage allowance claim.

You can also use the app to update your personal details, such as a change of address, and also how HMRC communicate with you.

Tax calculator

The app contains a tax calculator that allows you to estimate your take-home pay by entering:

  • how much you get paid;
  • your pay frequency;
  • whether you are over state pension age; and
  • your tax code.

The calculator will provide a summary of the amount that you earn, your take-home pay and the National Insurance that you will pay. You can see the weekly, monthly and yearly figures.

However, it should be used only as an indicator as it does not take account of everything that may affect your take home pay; for example, it does not reflect pension contributions and student loan deductions.

Annual tax summary

You can also use the app to check your annual tax summary for the last three tax years for which a return has been submitted. The summary will show you your total income and total tax and National Insurance.

You can also see how the Government have spent what you paid in tax.

Downloading the app

You can download the app from the App Store for iOS devices and from the Google Play Store for Android devices. Links to the app are available at www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-official-hmrc-app/the-free-hmrc-app.

Once you have downloaded the app, you will need to enter your Government Gateway user ID and password to sign in for the first time. These are the same details that you use to access your personal tax account. Once you have signed in, you can create a 6-digit PIN which you can use to access the app in future. You can also use facial recognition or your fingerprint to access the app.

Please call if you need help with any of the issues raised in this alert.
